What is Punctuation Mark ?

A mark, Such as a full stop, comma, or question mark, used in writing to separate sentences and their elements and to clarify meaning.

वाक्य को लिखते अथवा बोलते समय बिच में कही थोड़ा बहुत रुकना पड़ता  है ा जिससे भाषा  सही, अर्थवान हो जाती है ा लिखित भाषा में इसी ठहराव को दिखने के लिए कुछ विशेष प्रकार के चिन्हो का प्रयोग करते है उन्हें हम विराम-चिन्ह (Punctuation Mark )कहते है ा 

There are 14 Punctuation Mark :

Full Stop – ( . )

Uses of Full Stop 

At the end of Imperative & Declarative Sentence
After an Abbreviation (Short form ) 

Comma – ( , ) 

Uses of Comma 

To give a short pause 
Always after Introductory Adverb or Adverb phrase
To introduce a Quotation 

Apostrophe – ( ‘ )

Uses of Apostrophe 

To Express Possession
To Contract two more words
Other Special Cases 

Question Mark – ( ? )

Uses of Question Mark 

At the end of Interrogative Sentence

Exclamation Mark – ( ! )

Uses of Exclamation Mark 

They are commonly used after Interjections
It is used to express the emotion like, excitement, surprise, astonishment, emphasis, etc.

Quotation Mark / Inverted Comma – ( ”   ” )

Uses of Quotation Mark 

It is used to indicate the beginning and end of a quote.


Colon – ( : )

Uses of Colon

To introduce a quotation
To enumerate a list
To mention the Time & Ratio

Semi Colon – ( ; )

Uses of Semi – Colon

Most common uses of Semi- Colon is to join two independent clause without using a conjunction like “and”
It is used with Conjunctive Adverbs
It is used in a Serial List 


Dash – ( ____ )

Uses of Dash 

Dash is used to separate a group of word
It is used in last or first of sentence to Finish the sentence.

Hyphen – ( – )

Uses of Hyphen 

Hyphen is used to join two words or part of words.

Parentheses – (  () )

Uses of Parentheses

It is used to add extra information in the sentence.

Braces – (  {}  )

Uses of Braces 

Braces are used for math equation, 

It rarely used in prose


Bracket – (  []  )

Uses of Bracket 

It show that words have been added to a direct quotation. 


Ellipsis – (____ or ___)

Uses of Ellipsis 

It is used when omitting a word, phrase, line, paragraph.
